Florence and her husband B.G. Gray commissioned the Rose Walk (designed by Bernard Maybeck), one of Berkeley's most celebrated pathways, in 1913. After the 1923 Berkeley fire, the Grays commissioned architect Henry Higby Gutterson to create an integrated community of houses on lots bordering the Rose Walk. This was completed in 1936. Henry Gutterson graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Architecture in 1905 and attended L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France from 1906 to 1909. He worked for John Galen Howard on the design staff for the Panama-Pacific Exposition and for the Oakland city architect's staff before opening his own practice in 1916.
